What is a Bullet Journal and Why Should You Start one?

I had a diary when I was younger and I even kept a journal through high school and college. I also kept a journal during the year after my daughter was born. I still have all of these. There’s something about going back and reading your own words that takes you back to a time long ago.

My daughter started a bullet journal about a year ago. I thought it was pretty cool but I thought it looked like a lot of work and I didn’t think I would really enjoy it. She convinced me to try it this last summer and I found that I really loved it. I loved that my calendar was there in writing, I loved planning meals for the week and putting them on the calendar, I loved keeping a list of things I was thankful every day and being able to go back and look it it later and I loved that I was creating a history that my daughter would have when I was gone. I am no on my second journal which I will start in the new year.

The great thing about the bullet journal is you can make it as complicated or as simple as you like. There are no rules, you can make it your own. You can use your talents and skills to personalize the journal. No two bullet journals are the same and I love that. Mine is more on the simple side. I am NOT artistic so I don’t even try to draw and illustrate my journal. I try to stick to what I can do best and that is just writing.

Above you can see some pictures of my 2017 bullet journal. I tried to illustrate the first page and as you can see I can pretty much only draw rainbows, flowers and trees. And I don’t even do those well! I started my journal with a space to record things for future months as I normally set up my monthly spread just a few days before the month starts. One of my favorite spreads is the books to read spread. I tried my best to draw a bookshelf and I am actually pretty proud of this one. I keep track of the books I plan to read for the year and mark them off as I read them.
